Mecca Masjid: in Hyderabad city
Mecca Masjid is located in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad laying 100yards south-west of Charminar. It is considered as one of the main mosques in the city and a spectacular emblem of Islamic art and architecture. Borrowed its name and soil from the Grand Mosque of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, the Mecca Masjid of Hyderabad is one of the oldest and holiest site of Islam.
Started by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the 6th Sultan of Golconda ( now Hyderabad ) in 1617, the mausoleum was finished later by Mughal Emperor Aurangazeb after he conquered the city of Hyderabad. Traces of its history are found in the travelogue of French explorer who recorded that it took 1400 oxen to carry the rocks that was used to build this enormous stone embellished structure. The monument had thousands of masons and workers employed and its construction carried over during the reigns of Abdullah Qutb Shah and Abul Hasan Tana Shah. The masjid was completed in 1694 during the reign of Emperor Aurangazeb. It took 77years to complete this grand edifice seen today.
The roof of the masjid is supported by 15 arches; five arches on each sides. The main hall of Mecca masjid can accommodate more than 10,000 worshipers at a time. There is a sheer wall on the fourth side built to provide mehrab. Once the gate is crossed, there lays a man-made pond accompanied by two benches made of stone slab. Legend has it, whoever sits on the bench returns back to sit on them again. Ensemble of holy scriptures and lyrics are etched all over the masjid. The Qur’an embellished arches and doors, the floral motifs running around the entire structure marks its close resemblance to the twin contemporary monuments built around the era of Qutub Shahi architecture – Charminar and Golkonda Fort. With a height of 75ft and the width of 220ft, the Makka masjid stands for a grand display of royal Islamic architecture seamlessly built to integrate the house of solemn worship and devotion with the regal fervor of Islamic architecture which is truly unmatched in any mosques built in the subcontinent.
